How to Battle the February Blues

Canadian winters can be rough. It’s cold. It’s dreary. Daylight is often hard to come by.

It’s easy to feel a lack of motivation, energy, and happiness during the winter. It is so common; that it has even been coined the “February blues.”

Luckily though, there are many ways that seniors can boost their mood and battle the blues.

Exercise

Staying physically active is one of the best ways to boost your mood any time of the year. For seniors, who may have limited mobility, this may be challenging. However, Delmanor offers a variety of exercise programs to cater to differing levels of mobility.

Balance and Strength classes, gentle fitness, and yoga are only a few options.

If that isn’t appealing, a short indoor walk, by yourself or with some friends will do the trick.

Stay Social

Gathering and laughing with friends is a sure mood booster. Here at Delmanor, we offer many ways for seniors to stay social.

From movie nights, bridge and euchre, cocktail hours, or bingo, there are activities for everyone.

There are also regular opportunities to travel out into the community for structured events such as going to the ROM, trips to Walmart or Indigo, or going to an Ed McMirvish musical.

If structured events aren’t your thing, you can always socialize in your room, go out in the community with friends, or grab a coffee or meal in one of our restaurants.

Listen to Music

Music has been proven to elevate mood. Turn on some music in your room and enjoy the beats of your favourite song.

Or perhaps, you would prefer to listen to live music. No problem. Delmanor offers live concerts on Sunday afternoons.

Eat Healthy and Stay Hydrated

A huge part of how you feel is determined by what you put into your body. Choosing healthier eating choices and drinking lots of water can help fight away the blues.

Take Advantage of the Daylight

Exposure to sunlight causes the brain to increase its release of serotonin – a mood-boosting hormone.

On sunny days, open your blinds and let the sunlight fill your room. When the temperature isn’t as frightful, venture outside, even for a few minutes and let the sun hit your face.

Stimulate Your Brain

Keeping your brain active and engaged is a great way to help battle the blues. Daily crossword puzzles, word searches, or sudoku can help stimulate your mind.

Delmanor also offers many opportunities to expand your mind and keep on learning.  Trivia nights, art workshops, or a game of Scrabble are also great ways to keep your mind sharp.

Winters can be tough, but there are ways to make them a bit easier. Delmanor is here to help you along the way.
